Which is the right windlass for me?

Choosing a suitable windlass for your boat and needs is vital to ensure safe and smooth operation. No one factor can be used to determine a suitable model but rather, a combination of factors must be considered. The following is step-by step guide to assist you in choosing the right windlass for you.

Step 1 – What is the size and displacement of your boat?

Step 2 – What is the weight of your anchor?

Step 3 – How much space do you have below deck to store your chain and rope?

  • If you have limited space below deck, we recommend our Horizontal range.
  • If you have ample space below deck, we recommend our Vertical range.

Having considered all the above factors, please refer to the table to choose the most suitable Windlass for you:

Additional considerations
For the Horizontal range only: power out function or dual free fall function?

Power out: This function pays out the electric power from the motor and you will need to keep pressing the ‘down’ switch until the anchor reaches the seabed. You have the option of manually free falling the anchor by lifting the tension arm (finger above the gypsy).

Free fall: In this function, when you press the ‘down’ button, the clutch will open and the anchor will drop to the bottom. Once at the bottom, you will need to press ‘up’ to reengage the clutch. It uses mainly the gears meaning less power from the motor and thus consumes less battery.

NOTE: The dual free fall option allows you to select between the power out and free fall functions.

NOTE: The 900 series comes standard with selectable power out and free fall functions.

For 710 series only: nylon or stainless steel gypsy?

This depends on the frequency of use.

  • If you will not be using your windlass frequently, we recommend the nylon gypsy
  • If you will be using your windlass frequently, we recommend the stainless stain gypsy

NOTE: All other series come standard with a stainless steel gypsy.
